Dental Crown

Before installing a crown, a few office visits may be required. First, impressions will be created so a custom-made crown can be designed for you. The tooth to be crowned will have to be built up or filled. A temporary crown or Flapper (false tooth) may be placed in your mouth for a few weeks until your permanent crown is made in a lab. Once the crown is ready, your dentist will numb your mouth with a local anesthetic.

After removing your temporary crown or Flapper, your permanent crown will be affixed in place with dental cement. The total process could involve 2 to 4 office visits and may take a few weeks.

Discuss with your dentist which type of crown is best for you. A ceramic tooth will appear natural but is more costly than a metal crown. A gold crown can be more precisely fitted to your mouth than a ceramic crown, but it will not look like a natural tooth. Your dentist can help make the best selection for your unique situation.
